LONDON, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Severe Baltic winter weather swept Britain for a second day Monday, with three road accident deaths attributed to icy conditions on Christmas Day.

While little of the island had snow for Christmas, cold winds and blizzards began Sunday, and forecasters issued a severe weather warning that heavy snow would fall in eastern and southeastern England, with more than 6 inches expected in some areas.

Severe weather warnings were also issued Sunday as a result of widespread fog in southwest Scotland, northwest England and the Midlands.

Forecaster Dave Cox told The Times of London a combination of high pressure over Scandinavia and low pressure over the Baltic and northeast Germany had contributed to the latest cold snap.

Last month, a cold snap dumped more than a foot of snow on southern England, forced hundreds of schools and roads to close and left about a thousand people trapped in their vehicles for hours in Cornwall.
