SHONAI, Japan, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Rescue operations wound down at the derailment of a high-speed commuter train in Shonai, where officials said four people died and 32 others were injured.
The 6-car train went of the tracks Sunday night while traveling at about 65 mph, with 44 passengers and two crew members aboard, the Kyodo news agency said.
"The train was lifted off the tracks when it was hit by sudden winds," police quoted the 29-year-old train's engineer as saying.
The first three cars overturned, and all four fatalities were from crushing injuries in the first car, the report said.
A snowstorm warning had been issued in the area and a maximum wind speed of 48 mph had been registered about 4 miles from the accident site shortly before the derailment, the Yamagata Meteorological Observatory said.
