ZHONGSHAN, China, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- A Christmas Day fire in a bar in the southern Chinese city of Zhongshan has killed 26 people and injured at least eight.
Some reports say fallen disco lights or a gas blast could have caused Sunday's fire in the Guangdong province city, the BBC reported Monday.
Hong Kong Cable TV reported that many of the injured were hospitalized with severe burns.
A woman working at a nearby restaurant told Cable TV that the bar probably would have been crowded because of Christmas -- an increasingly popular cause for celebration among young people, despite China being officially atheist.
Reports said the bar was operating illegally and that the owner had been detained for questioning.
Fires occur frequently in bars, hotels and discos in China, the BBC said. At Christmas 2000, a fire in a disco in the central city of Luoyang killed 309 people.
