JERSEY CITY, N.J., Dec. 26 (UPI) -- The search for a New Jersey police officer entered its second day Monday in the Hackensack River after he and a partner drove off an open drawbridge.
The unidentified officers had been dispatched at 8:15 p.m. Sunday in heavy fog to help direct traffic away from the Lincoln Highway Bridge, which was not operating properly, Jersey City police spokesman Stan Eason told the New York Daily News.
Divers located the police truck in 45 feet of water, which was only about 41 degrees, said Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Tom Sperduto.
New York Police Department scuba divers brought up one of the officers sometime after 10 p.m.
The channel is used by commercial boat traffic, generally petroleum barges going to and from nearby refineries, but remained closed to shipping Monday morning.
