WASHINGTON, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- U.S. Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Peter Pace said the military is in the midst of a delicate balancing act when it comes to troop levels in Iraq.
In an interview on "Fox News Sunday," Pace said it would be wrong just to add Iraqi troops to U.S. forces in a bid to crush the insurgency.
"It's a real balancing act between having sufficient forces and having too many forces," Pace said.
He said there's no such thing as too many Iraqi forces, "but Iraqis themselves prefer to have foreign forces leave their country as soon as possible. We need to be respectful of the Iraqi government, which has just been elected."
Pace also said U.S. troops have much to be proud of in Iraq and re-enlistment rates show they are.
He repeated the administration line on when troops would be coming home, saying there is no plan to draw down levels below 100,000 by the end of 2006 -- but rather to keep troop levels as high as they need to be to control the insurgency.
