NEWCASTLE, England, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- A man in Britain, convicted for spiking a woman's drink with a potentially deadly drug, has been sentenced to prison for five years.
Michael Wright, 35, is believed to be the first man in Britain to be convicted and imprisoned for such an offence, reported the Times of London Sunday.
The 23-year-old woman, whose name has not been made public, had met Wright during a night out with friends and Wright ordered two vodka and Cokes. The Newcastle Crown Court was told Wright tipped the chemical gamma-hydroxybutyrate, or GHB, into the women's glass from a water bottle and said it was vodka.
The woman collapsed and was taken unconscious to hospital, where tests showed she had liquid Ecstasy in her system.
Wright, a plasterer from Newcastle who also worked as a bar doorman, was banned for 10 years from working as a doorman or barman under a sexual offences prevention order. The conviction requires him to register as a sex offender.
