MOSCOW, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- The Russian energy giant Gazprom has warned Ukraine against tapping into natural gas meant for Europe, reports Novosti news agency.

"If Ukraine carries out its threatening statements and taps natural gas being supplied to Europe, it will bear full responsibility," Gazprom Deputy Chairman Alexander Medvedev told reporters.

The official assured Gazprom would fully supply European consumers through Ukraine's gas transportation system and that the state-controlled company hoped to reach a compromise with Ukraine.

The dispute stems from Gazprom's decision to raise Ukraine's annual bill by more than $1 billion by ending below-market pricing, other media reports said.
