AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas, eager to regain his House majority leader job, is pressing his effort to get an early trial on money laundering charges.
The Texas lawmaker plans to take his case to the state Court of Criminal Appeals after a lower appeals court turned down his request to get the trial started early, the Houston Chronicle reports. An early trial in January is crucial for DeLay to regain his post, which he had to quit after the charges were filed against him in September.
The lower court rejected his bid because prosecutors plan to appeal the dismissal of a related charge accusing DeLay of violating the election code in 2002, the report said.
DeLay's lead lawyer Dick DeGuerin said his client will ask the Court of Criminal Appeals to intervene in the appeal filed last week by Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle, saying a long legal battle would disrupt Congress, the Chronicle reported.
