International role for Quebec backed

OTTAWA, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Conservative leader Stephen Harper said Monday that if his party wins the upcoming election it will give Quebec more of a role in international relations.

"Millions of Quebecers are looking for an alternative to corruption and separation that only a new Conservative government can provide," he said.

A recent poll showed that 60 percent of Quebec's voters would like the province to have an independent voice on the international scene.

The Toronto Star reported that Harper's pledge is similar to one by Prime Minister Paul Martin in the last election.

Martin's Liberals, Harper's Conservatives and the New Democratic Party face off in January. Martin's governing coalition fell apart when the NDP bolted over reform of the Canadian Health System.
