Feds investigate Orleans Levee Board

NEW ORLEANS, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- The Orleans Levee Board has received two subpoenas from U.S. prosecutors, one seeking most of the agency's files and the other personnel records and leases.

The board was required to turn over the information to a federal grand jury on Friday, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported.

The failure of the levees in the wake of Hurricane Katrina brought the board national attention. U.S. Attorney Jim Letten announced last month that his agency and the FBI were investigating whether failure to oversee New Orleans' flood control system contributed to the disaster.

The second subpoena suggests that Letten is investigating possible conflicts of interest at the board after the hurricane. Among the items sought are paperwork for the lease of office space in Baton Rouge owned by a former board attorney who resigned after news of the deal became public. The subpoena also requested personnel information on another board attorney who was first suspended and then resigned after criticizing the lease.
