BAGHDAD, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Votes in Iraq's parliamentary election are being counted, with early reports that a secular Sunni alliance and a religious Shiite bloc are in the lead.
Despite official results due out at the end of December and pressure from officials to not announce results early, TV stations in Iraq said Adnan al-Dulaimi, the Sunni leader, has 40 percent of votes in Baghdad, the Washington Times reports.
Another station said the numbers were lower and very close to secular Shiiite Iyad Allawi and a bloc of religious Shiites, the Washington Times reports.
The Iran-backed Shiite group the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq is said to have a strong lead in southern cities of Najaf, Basra and Karbala, the Times said.
The Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq said all allegations of election fraud would be addressed and called for any evidence to be brought forward.
Voter turnout is estimated near 70 percent and violence has been minimal.
