Russia: Bin Laden operative killed

MOSCOW, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- Russian security officials confirmed Friday international al-Qaida-linked terrorist Abu Omar al-Seif was killed in Daghestan.

The Federal Security Service said al-Seif had been operating in the North Caucasus for a decade and was taking orders directly from Osama bin Laden, the Russian Information Agency Novosti reported.

Separately, the FSB said it had broken up a terrorist group in Siberia that had been planning attacks on Novosibirsk and Volograd.

FSB Director Nikolai Patrushev told reporters 18 people were suspected of involvement in the ring and more than 80 pounds of explosives were seized.
