HONG KONG, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- The World Trade Organization should help poor nations improve their infrastructure so they can successfully participate in global trade, Japan said Wednesday.
Speaking at the WTO ministerial meeting in Hong Kong Wednesday, Foreign Minister Taro Aso said the organization should help the least developed countries increase their production capacity, improve their transport systems and find overseas markets for their products.
In a written statement submitted to the conference, Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Toshihiro Nikai said the organization should become a "WTO with a human face."
He said Japan was ready to help the least developed countries with various kinds of assistance, including the introduction of its "one-village, one-product" initiative aimed at making local products globally competitive.
Last Friday, Japan announced a $10 billion aid package to promote trade by developing countries.
