Chile's Bachelet faces runoff vote

SANTIAGO, Chile, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Presidential hopeful Michelle Bachelet will face billionaire candidate Sebastian Pinera in a runoff election based on results of Sunday's vote.

Though she was expected to win the presidency outright, Bachelet failed to garner more than 50 percent of the vote needed.

The former defense minister won 45.8 percent of the vote, while Pinera came in second in the multi-candidate race with 25.7 percent.

If she wins the Jan. 15 runoff, Bachelet will become Chile's first female president.
