Vandals sideline school buses

MCHENRY, Ill., Dec. 10 (UPI) -- School was canceled Friday for some 7,000 students in McHenry County, in the Chicago suburbs, after vandals flattened tires on 35 school buses.

McHenry Deputy Police Chief William Brogan said most of the tires were deflated, but two were slashed, and two bus windows were broken.

School officials said classes were expected to resume Monday, the Chicago Tribune reported.

There was no sign of forced entry at the isolated parking lot, which is surrounded by a chain-link fence and has a locked gate. A storm had dumped heavy snow on the area the night before.

While parents were unhappy about having to rework their schedules Friday, their children rejoiced at the chance to visit sledding hills and skating rinks, the newspaper said.

"Someone said, 'It's a tire-slashing day, not a snow day,'" said Linda Glascott, president of the McHenry High School booster club. "But how could they get in there to do that, especially in a snowstorm?"
