Venezuela wins Mercosur seat

CARACAS, Venezuela, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- South America's most prominent trade bloc has decided to admit Venezuela to its ranks, El Universal newspaper reported Saturday.

Venezuela is set to join the ranks of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.

Some businesspeople in those countries expressed concern that Venezuela's membership in the bloc could jeopardize trade ties with the United States, as Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has been an ardent critic of U.S. policy in South America.
