Student gets apology in Spanish flap

KANSAS CITY, Kan., Dec. 9 (UPI) -- A Kansas high school junior suspended for speaking Spanish at school has received an apology for the disciplinary action from the district superintendent.

Principal Jennifer Watts sent the student home Nov. 28 and suspended him through the following day. The boy had spoken his native language at lunch and again later in the day, The Kansas City (Mo.) Star said.

The boy's father contacted Superintendent Bobby Allen of the Turner School District in Kansas City, Kan., who quickly reversed the suspension.

Students are not forbidden from speaking Spanish at any school in the district, Bart Swartz, the district's executive director of certified personnel, said.
