Man killed in shootout at Tahoe casino

RENO, Nev., Dec. 4 (UPI) -- A man was killed and two sheriff's deputies wounded after a shootout in the Harrah's Lake Tahoe VIP Diamond Lounge.

The Douglas County deputies exchanged gunfire with the man Saturday afternoon after responding to a report of a suspicious person in the VIP lounge, where high-stakes gamblers relax off the main casino floor, authorities said.

The unidentified suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. They did not say how many times he was shot, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported.

"We don't know who did what," Sheriff Ron Pierini said of the exchange of gunfire.

Casino patron Bob Golub of Pittsburgh described the scene as chaotic.

"Everyone just started rushing, and then people started ducking behind the machines, and some elderly people were ducking behind tables and stuff ... and people just taking off," Golub told KRNV News 4.

Harrah's security did not know the man had a gun in the casino, said John Packer, a Harrah's spokesman.
