"It was like an explosion and we didn't know what it was," a customer in the downtown Loop restaurant told WLS-TV, Chicago.

The Volvo reportedly smashed through the parking lot's lowered security gate at a high rate of speed, hit a pedestrian and rammed the restaurant.

Witnesses said the pedestrian was knocked into the air and landed on the sidewalk before the vehicle plowed into the window. At least five people were treated for cuts and bruises at hospitals, but none of the injuries was considered life threatening.

The SUV's 36-year-old driver was charged with negligent driving and striking a pedestrian.
