Washington court considers gay marriage

WASHINGTON, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Washington state could soon join Massachusetts as a place where same-sex couples can marry.

The state's Supreme Court heard arguments in March on whether requiring marriage to be between a man and a woman violates the state Constitution's equal protection clause, stateline.org reported. Two lower courts ruled that it does.

More states are going the other way, with constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriages approved in 19 states and votes expected within the next year or two in several more.

A federal judge ruled earlier this year that Nebraska's ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. The decision does not bar states from making gay marriage illegal, but the judge found that the Nebraska law included language that denied homosexuals rights available to others under the federal constitution.
