Prince Charles sues over journal leak

LONDON, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- British Prince Charles is taking The Mail on Sunday to court for publishing journal writings in which he called Chinese officials "appalling old waxworks."

The comment was among a number of biting observations the Prince of Wales scribbled in his journal during the 1997 handover of Hong Kong to China.

Legal action initiated by the prince Friday claims the newspaper breached his copyright and confidentiality by reprinting his musings, The Times of London reported Saturday.

The prince frequently keeps journals of key events he attends, then circulates copies among a small circle of friends and relatives. A copy of his Hong Kong diary was leaked to the newspaper, which published embarrassing excerpts last Sunday, days after China's President Hu completed a state visit to Britain.

The Mail has denied any wrongdoing in publishing what it called a "historic document."
