Katrina dogs found in filthy Ark. shelter

GAMALIEL, Ark., Nov. 15 (UPI) -- A Gamaliel, Ark., couple has been charged with animal cruelty for keeping 100 Hurricane Katrina dogs among nearly 500 animals in filthy, cramped conditions.

At least six dogs that had been rescued from New Orleans were dead -- some still in the cages they were sent in from the Louisiana city, ABC News and The Baxter Bulletin in Mountain Home, Ark., reported.

The owners of Every Dog Needs a Home, Tammy and William Hanson, were charged in late October with animal cruelty in the so-called animal hoarding case.

"They were standing in their own filth, feces, urine," the Humane Society of the United States said in a report. "Their paws were burning, bleeding. You couldn't get close to them at first. They were so aggressive. They had not been walked or moved, and they were in such pain."

William Hanson denied mistreating the 477 dogs, three goats and two cats.
