SHANXI, China, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- A heavy-duty truck hit a group of students jogging on a highway killing 20 and injuring 30 others in North China's Shanxi Province.
The accident happened Monday in Guodao Township in Qinyuan County, the Xinhua news agency said. The students and teachers were from the Qinyuan No. 2 Middle School.
A teacher said the students were asked to do their morning exercises on the road because the school's playground was not big enough, China Daily reported Tuesday.
The driver failed to stop the truck after hitting the first student, an official with the local traffic police department said.
Provincial educational authorities ordered all schools to stop students from doing exercises along main streets or highways after the accident.
China has the highest annual road death toll in the world, with collisions and other accidents killing nearly 107,000 people last year.
