Mom guilty of baby's death by chili powder

DALLAS, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- A Texas mother has been sentenced to seven years in prison for suffocating her 6-month-old daughter with chili powder.

Angela Disabella, 21, of Irving, who said she used the powder to keep her baby from sucking her thumb, was convicted of manslaughter.

Over five days of testimony, prosecutors charged that the baby had been abused and neglected throughout her short life, the Dallas Morning News said.

The Dallas jury of eight men and four women deliberated for two days before deciding against a more serious charge of capital murder, which would have carried an automatic life-in-prison sentence.
