Polls show Tony Blair hurt last week

LONDON, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- A new poll shows poor ratings for British Prime Minister Tony Blair after a defeat over a controversial anti-terrorism measure.

The Telegraph of London reports an ICM poll of voters found 64 percent thought the defeat in Parliament Wednesday of a move to allow terrorist suspects to be detained 90 days without charge had hurt Blair's control over the government.

More than half polled urged Blair to compromise on the measure. British law currently allows law enforcement to detain such suspects for 14 days.

The poll is worrying some members of his Labor Party.

Some fear in-party fighting as well as questions surrounding who their next leader will be.

Blair said he would step down as prime minister before the next election, expected in 2009.

Twenty-four percent of those polled said he should resign now.
