British honor armistice with silence

LONDON, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Millions of people across Britain marked Armistice Day with a two-minute moment of silence Friday to remember all who died in war.

The brief ceremony at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month represents the moment when the guns fell silent in 1918 at the end of World War I.

As Big Ben chimed at 11 a.m., around 45 million people stopped what they were doing to honor those who fought and perished for Britain, the BBC reported. Towns and cities came to a standstill while businesses and schools paused to reflect, the Telegraph of London said.

The BBC said Britain's oldest veteran, 109-year-old Henry Allingham, traveled to France to place a wreath at the first permanent memorial to British air personnel who served on the Western Front.
