New mayors in Cleveland and Cincinnati

CLEVELAND, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Cleveland City Council President Frank Jackson ousted one-term incumbent Mayor Jane Campbell by winning nearly 55 percent of the vote.

Campbell got about 45 percent in an election where less than one-third of eligible voters participated. She said she was leaving the city in better shape than she found it when she took office.

Jackson, 59, is the first City Council member to win the city's highest office in 138 years, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.

"To me this was not a vote for Frank Jackson as much as it was a vote for the future of the city of Cleveland ... I accept what you have given me, and I won't let you down," Jackson said in his victory speech.

In Cincinnati, voters elected state Sen. Mark Mallory, D-Cincinnati, the city's first African-American mayor by a 52 percent to 48 percent margin in a runoff. Mayor Charlie Luken did not seek re-election.
