Japan asks Chile to see Peru's Fujimori

SANTIAGO, Chile, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Japan asked Chile Wednesday for permission to visit with former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, who Chilean officials arrested earlier this week.

Fujimori was detained Sunday upon his arrival from Japan, where he has citizenship. The former Peruvian leader said he was en route home, where he said he wanted to stage a re-election bid.

"Japan will take measures it deems necessary and feasible for any Japanese citizen detained overseas," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Yoshinori Katori.

Fujimori's decade-long reign (1990-2000) ended when he was accused of corruption and ordering the deaths of 25 left-wing rebels.

He denied any wrongdoing, but fled the country for Japan in 2000. Several attempts by the Peruvian government to extradite Fujimori from Japan were unsuccessful.
