China warns of terror threat to hotels

BEIJING, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Chinese police have warned that Islamic extremists may plan to attack luxury hotels in China in the coming week, the U.S. Embassy in Beijing said Wednesday.

Chinese authorities said they were taking appropriate security measures and thoroughly investigating the possible threat, the embassy said in a statement. It warned U.S. citizens to be alert and exercise caution when traveling in China.

The threat comes 10 days before U.S. President Bush is due to visit Beijing.

China is not considered a likely target of foreign-based Muslim militants. It claims that separatists among its Muslim Uighur minority in the country's northwest pose a security threat, however, and has justified crackdowns in the region in the name of the war on terror.
