Suspect in wife's disappearance kills self

VAN BUREN, Ark., Nov. 8 (UPI) -- A St. Louis man suspected of killing his missing wife killed himself as police surrounded the trailer where he was hiding in Arkansas.

Demetrius Mitchell was found dead from a gunshot wound when police stormed the trailer Monday after attempting to contact him using a bullhorn for 90 minutes, the St. Louis Post Dispatch reported.

Mitchell and his estranged wife, Jamilia Harris Mitchell, vanished from St. Louis last month. The couple's 5-year-old son told his grandfather and then police that he saw his father shoot his mother inside her car.

Jamilia Mitchell's car turned up a few days later. Investigators found traces of blood inside it.

Investigators searched the mobile home Mitchell was using, searching for clues to his wife's whereabouts.

Police in St. Louis told the Post-Dispatch that they fear Jamilia Mitchell is dead.

"We would hope that if there's somebody out there who knows something but was afraid to come forward, that they come forward now," an officer told the newspaper.

Mitchell reportedly had relatives in northwest Arkansas, about 400 miles from St. Louis.
