Police kill notorious bandit in gun battle

BHOPAL, India, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- India's notorious bandit Nirbhay Gujjar, wanted in some 200 murder and kidnap cases, has died in a gun battle with police in northern Madhya Pradesh state.

Police said Gujjar, who first name means fearless in Hindi, died Monday in the dense forest of Etawah district. Gujjar operated in the Chambal ravines of the state, made famous by India's most famous outlaw, the late Bandit Queen Phoolan Devi, reported the BBC.

Police said a special task force tracked Gujjar, believed to be in his late 40's or 50's, on a tip.

In appearance and tactics, Gujjar was like another dreaded bandit Veerappan, who had eluded police for years until he was killed in October in southern India.
