Ohio's Ney sets up defense fund

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, told the House he has been subpoenaed in the investigation of a lobbyist and has set up a legal defense fund.

Ney reported his receipt of a subpoena to appear before a grand jury hearing testimony about the lobbying of Jack Abramoff. The Hill, a Washington newspaper, reported Ney has set up a legal defense fund to handle expenses expected from the Abramoff investigation.

A Federal Election Commission filing last month showed Ney paid a Washington law firm $136,000 for representation. Another filing indicated Ney had less than $2,000 in assets and a re-election fund of $422,000, the Hill said.

Ney accepted campaign contributions from Abramoff, who has been indicted in an investigation of allegedly misuse of funds from the client.

The Hill said Ney is not alone in having a legal defense fund. At least 10 of his House colleagues have such funds.
