New Jersey, Virginia elect governors

RICHMOND, Va., Nov. 8 (UPI) -- President Bush has stepped into the off-year election campaign, appearing with the Republican Party nominee seeking to be Virginia's next governor.

Quirks in election timing give Virginia and New Jersey added attention in Tuesday's off-year election, as both elect governors, with Democrats trying to hold both governors' houses.

Bush campaigned Monday for Jerry Kilgore, who resigned as Virginia's attorney general last February to seek the governor's job. Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine, a Democrat, is trying to succeed his boss, Gov. Mark Warner, who by Virginia law cannot run for a second consecutive term despite high popularity in the state.

Late polls show the race too close to call, with Kaine generally considered in the lead but within the margins of error of surveys.

New Jersey voters are looking for a replacement for Gov. Jim McGreevey, who resigned office last year after admitting to a homosexual relationship. This has turned into one of the most expensive races for governor, which isn't a surprise considered the Democratic Party nominee -- Sen. Jon Corzine -- made his race for the U.S. Senate one of the most costly. He is facing Republican businessman Doug Forrester. Polls indicate that Corzine had an advantage heading into Election Day.
