Iraq deputy prime minister visits Iran

TEHRAN, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Iraq's deputy prime minister Ahmad Chalabi has met with Iranian leaders before an upcoming visit to the United States.

Chalabi, once a popular ally of the Bush administration and a main source of pre-war Iraq intelligence, is scheduled to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice this week after more than a year of strained relations, The New York Times reports.

Chalabi was accused in May 2004 of giving Iran classified information. He denied the charge and the results of an investigation have not been released.

The meeting between Chalabi and Iran focused on Iran's influence in Iraqi politics.

Chalabi, a former Iraqi exile, may make a run for prime minister.

He said they talked about border security and that Iraq and the United States would continue to be allies.

Iran has been under fire recently. In September, the International Atomic Energy Agency said it wasn't complying with the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

On Oct. 26, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called for Israel to be "wiped off the map" at a rally, prompting international outcry and U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan to postpone a visit.
