Imprisoned JDL member killed

PHOENIX, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- A member of the Jewish Defense League imprisoned for planning to bomb a California mosque was beaten to death in his cell in a federal prison.

A spokesman for the league told CNN that Earl Krugel was hit from behind with a cement block. The FBI said the death is being investigated as a homicide.

Krugel pleaded guilty to a conspiracy to bomb a mosque in Culver City and the office of U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison along with Irv Rubin, a leader in the Jewish Defense League.

He was being held in a medium-security federal prison 25 miles north of Phoenix.
