HOUSTON, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- As a condemned Houston killer eludes law officers, the mother of his slain girlfriend fears he's looking for revenge.

Charles Victor Thompson was given the death penalty a second time at his resentencing hearing but slipped out of the Baker Street Jail while being returned to death row.

He was convicted of the 1998 murder of Dennise Hayslip, 39, his former girlfriend, and Darren Keith Cain, 30. Hayslip's relatives considered going into hiding, fearing retribution.

"They say all he wants to do is run," Wynona Donaghy, the slain woman's mother, told the Houston Chronicle. "I don't believe that. I really think he wants to get revenge,"

Throughout his trials and appeals, authorities and witnesses warned jurors to look beyond Thompson's appearance, calling him a "pretty boy" with a bad temper and characterizing him as a narcissistic sociopath who turns violent under stress.
