Ramadan ends for many Muslims

BAGHDAD, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- The holy fasting month of Ramadan ended for many Muslims worldwide Thursday, beginning the 3-day celebration of Eid al-Fitr.

Sunni Muslims in Iraq began the celebration by buying food and new clothes after early morning mosque services. The Eid celebrations also began in Afghanistan, Central Asia and Russia, Radio Free Europe reported.

In Bangladesh, the BBC said an estimated 6 million of Dhaka's 10 million people return to their villages to celebrate Eid with relatvies.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai said the suffering in earthquake-ravaged Pakistan tempers the Eid celebrations.

Shiite Muslims in Iraq will begin observing Eid on Friday, while in India, it will begin either Friday or Saturday, delayed by bombings that killed 62 people on Oct. 29 in New Delhi.
