WASHINGTON, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- The number of U.S. troops in Iraq will remain at its current level of almost 160,000 troops until January, the Pentagon said Thursday.
The force is larger than the one used to bring down Saddam Hussein's government in 2003. The number of troops hit a plateau earlier in 2005 at around 138,000 but was increased in response to the October constitutional referendum and the upcoming December national election.
The intention is to bring the number back to 138,000 after the election as soon as transport planes can be arranged, said Lt. Gen. James Conway, the Joint Staff director of operations at a Pentagon news conference.
"As soon as our logistics capability will allow us to do that, we will come back to that steady state," Conway said.
