SRINAGAR, India, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Five people were killed in a Kashmir suicide bomb attack Wednesday, described by Islamic militants as a "gift" to Indian Kashmir's incoming chief minister.
The bomber detonated his explosives-filled car after being ordered to stop by police in Nowgam, on the outskirts of the summer capital Srinagar. The five dead included the bomber, and five policemen and at least seven others were injured in the blast.
Islamic militant group Jaish-e-Mohammed called local news agency Current News Service to claim responsibility for the attack.
"The car bomb is our first gift to Ghulam Nabi Azad," Abu Qudama, spokesman for the militant group, told another news agency, the Kashmir News Service. Azad was to take office Wednesday as Indian Kashmir's new chief minister.
Qudama identified the bomber as coming from the Pakistan side of divided Kashmir, and said he had targeted Indian security patrols.
Convoys of troops pass frequently through Nowgam, which is close to the private home of outgoing chief minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed.
