MUNICH, Germany, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Edmund Stoiber Tuesday turned down an opportunity to join the new German Cabinet and will remain premier of Bavaria.
Stoiber is a member of the Christian Social Union, which is a Bavarian branch of the Christian Democratic Union. The CDU's Angela's Merkel is set to become Germany's first woman chancellor.
But she is having a problem building a Cabinet. Stoiber's decision is related to the resignation of Franz Muentefering as the head of the Social Democrats, the party set to join Merkel's CDU to form a government.
"Franz Muentefering is an authority and a key building block of the grand coalition," Stoiber said. "The course of the Social Democrats at the moment is unclear. ... The changed situation has led me to believe that I can better serve the interests of the CSU by staying in Munich."
Stoiber suggested that Michael Glos, a CSU lawmaker, take the Work and Technology Cabinet portfolio. Merkel is expected to accept the recommendation.
