NEW ORLEANS, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- The New Orleans Police Department has fired 45 officers and six civilians for abandoning their posts and failing to report for duty during Hurricane Katrina.
Acting Police Superintendent Warren Riley said another 15 officers resigned while under investigation for abandonment and 228 others are still being investigated for alleged abandonment, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported.
Riley said the officers "do not represent the heroes who remained in the city" during Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.
"We should not dwell on them because they did not have the best interest of the city or their colleagues at heart," said Riley.
The newspaper said 15 officers are being investigated for looting, and 45 officers have submitted letters of resignation, citing personal reasons -- ranging from relocation to other cities, to finding other employment.
