Disabled group sues Detroit

DETROIT, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- The Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America has sued Detroit, accusing the city of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The lawsuit cites bad curb ramps at intersections, bumpy sidewalks and city buses with inoperable wheelchair lifts, the Detroit News reported.

"We are honoring Rosa Parks for her accomplishments and rightfully so," said Mike Harris, the veterans' group deputy executive director. "But she was a wheelchair user later in her life. In today's world, she wouldn't be able to get on the bus in Detroit and she wouldn't be able to navigate the city."

Detroit has one of the highest rates of disability in the country, with one in four residents above the age of 5 having some kind of handicap.

Many of the curb cuts and ramps cited in the lawsuit were recently resurfaced, but the plaintiffs say they are too steep and uneven.
