China reports third bird flu outbreak

BEIJING, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- In China's third outbreak of bird flu within a week, 545 chickens and ducks died of the virus in central China, prompting authorities to destroy 2,500 birds.

The dead birds were found in a village in central Hunan province, the BBC reported Wednesday, citing a government veterinary bureau.

China had earlier told the United Nations that 2,100 geese in the eastern province of Anhui were infected. More than 500 of those birds died, and 45,000 were culled.

Last week 2,600 chickens and ducks were found dead at a farm in the northern region of Inner Mongolia.

No reports of humans infected with the virus have emerged from China.

The European Union Tuesday called for a ban on commercial imports of live birds, after a parrot in Britain was confirmed to have died of bird flu.

The commission had already temporarily banned imports of live poultry, game and feathers from Croatia after at least six swans died there from the H5N1 virus.
