Amnesty blasts Brazil on human rights

RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- International human rights watchdogs lambasted Brazil Tuesday for allegedly not doing enough to protect rights in South America's largest country.

Amnesty International said the Brazilian government did little to improve the human rights situation in 2005, citing the killing of a U.S. nun and activist in the Amazon earlier this year among many other cases of abuses.

The organization also said corrupt police were a continuing problem for the country as was gang violence and criticized the Brazilian government for not doing enough to combat either.

"Time and again, governments have failed to invest political or financial capital in the human rights reforms preferring to concentrate on short term political and economic goals, which are often seen to be contrary to these," said the Amnesty report.
