Woman dies after head hit by NY subway car

NEW YORK, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- A New York City woman died after her head was struck by an oncoming subway train as she stood on a platform in downtown Manhattan.

Witnesses said 44-year-old Jean Novak appeared faint and she swayed as the second-to-last subway car hit her in the head, police said.

The impact knocked the woman about 20 yards from the southern tip of the West Fourth St. station, the New York Daily News reported Sunday.

People nearby screamed as blood spilled from the woman's head and a law student held the woman's hand.

"I kept telling her, 'Don't worry, you're going to be fine,'" said Rochelle Lenchner. "I didn't want her to hear everyone else panicking."

Police said paramedics appeared in minutes and Novak was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan. She was pronounced dead late Saturday night.
