More quake aid needed in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Winter tents, blankets and other aid is desperately needed in Pakistan or people left homeless after the Oct. 8 earthquake will die in the weeks ahead.

Pakistan President Gen. Pervez Musharraf made that plea for more international help on CNN, an urgent message echoed by U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan and NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.

More than 51,000 people died in the 7.6 magnitude quake that rocked the Kashmir region of Pakistan and India. Regional authorities say more than 79,000 people have died. About 1,300 died in India.

People in the mountainous region are the hardest to reach and officials say they are the ones threatened by the impending winter.

NATO has increased aid missions from parts of Europe to Pakistan.

Annan called for more world attention on Pakistan. He said international aid has reached only 8 percent of the U.N. goal in the two weeks since the quake, compared to the 10 days it took to reach the goal set for last December's tsunami in Asia.

He warned that the response of the world to aid Pakistanis would be "a measure of our humanity."
