Nanny faces capital murder charge

MCKINNEY, Texas, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- A 27-year-old nanny in the Texas town of McKinney near Dallas faces a capital murder charge in the death of a 14-month-old boy in her care.

Police say Kyle Lazarchik died during the weekend after a severe brain injury, The Dallas Morning News reports.

The accused, Ada Betty Cuadros Fernandez, told police the baby hit his head on a door frame as she carried him, the report said. Doctors say the child's injuries were comparable to a fall from a six-story building or a major car crash.

Cuadros Fernandez' family told a newspaper in Peru the woman became a nanny because she loves kids, the Morning News reported.

"It's absurd to say that my wife killed a child. Her employers trusted her to such a degree that last week they threw a surprise birthday party for her," the woman's husband said.

The woman's parents told the Peruvian newspaper their daughter said the baby was hurt accidentally and police were pressuring her to confess to a murder she didn't commit.
