High court nominee Miers cagey on issues

WASHINGTON, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- In personal meetings with 18 U.S. Senators, U.S. Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers has avoided discussing her position on issues such as abortion.

Named by President George Bush in June to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, the 60-year-old Texas lawyer has refused to be nailed down on her opinion of the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision that allowed for abortions.

This has led to confusion on both sides of the political spectrum in the days ahead of her scheduled Senate confirmation hearings on Nov. 7, CNN reported.

Miers has worked for Bush since 1994, most recently as White House counsel.

Among the 18 senators Miers visited Monday were Democratic members of the Judiciary Committee including Charles Schumer of New York, where again, she was cagey on abortion.

"She said, 'No, nobody knows my views on Roe v. Wade,'" Schumer said. "She said, 'No one can speak for me on Roe v. Wade.'"
