LIMA, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Peruvian rescuers have begun evacuating more than 1,000 tourists stranded at the famous Machu Picchu archeological site following a mudslide earlier this week.

On Wednesday, a mudslide covered the train tracks leading to the mountaintop citadel in the Andes, El Comercio reported.

Though no one was hurt in the incident it left tourists stranded at Machu Picchu for several days.

Last year a mudslide struck the area killing six people.

An estimated 400,000 people visit Machu Picchu every year, making it one of the region's largest tourist draws.
