Drought in China affects 2.2 million

GUILIN, China, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Government officials in China warn more than 2 million citizens will face a shortage of drinking water after months of drought.

The flood control and drought relief officials of China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region said 1.4 million animals were lacking drinking water by the end of September, the Xinhua news service reports.

Water reserves are less than half of last year's levels at this point of the year.

Some 635,000 residents of the region's capital, Guilin, are facing the most serious conditions affecting farming and basic drinking water.

Local governments through the affected region have invested more than $11 million to fight the drought giving an additional 990,000 people access to drinking water.
